AGE: 14
GENDER: Male
YEAR IN SCHOOL/FACULTY POSITION: HS-1

APPEARANCE: Don't be fooled, it's actually a boy.
PERSONALITY: Calm, courteous, and congenial, Kirino is a very pleasant boy overall. He just seems to have a "thing" for people, with a natural charisma and understanding of how people work. He's very friendly and sincere, and sometimes he even comes across as protective, especially of his friends. He doesn't consider himself to be the leading type at all—he's more apt to lend a listening ear, a word of advice, or a shoulder to lean on. A supportive role fits him best and he knows it. Within his team, he's an additional voice of reason and caution, generally advising against rash decisions and favoring the idea of thinking things through. Somewhere down there, he keeps idealistic hopes, but more often than not, he knows that they're just that. Idealistic hopes. On the other hand, he makes a point in not being pessimistic. He does his best to be rational when making his own decisions and attempts to keep a standpoint that's objective. This seems to go hand-in-hand with how he usually manages to keep a cool head in a crisis. After all, how can a person make their decisions properly if their judgement is clouded by their own rage?

This isn't to say, however, that he doesn't have his moments of slipping up. He's only human, after all. Despite his best attempts into remaining collected in all situations, with the proper amount of goading, he does act without thinking every now and then. He's not immune to jumping to conclusions or making assumptions. He gets agitated just like any other person (it just takes a bit more effort). When he's properly provoked, Kirino has the potential to fly into a rage. It's a good thing, in that case, that pushing him to this point takes a lot. There are few that know exactly what buttons one has to press to agitate Kirino—in fact; most significant is one of his underclassmen, one Kariya Masaki. It's a classic case of "if they know you'll react, they'll keep picking on you", and it's a lesson Kirino took a while to learn. Of course, that might just be a tolerance to Kariya that Kirino has built up, rather than a tolerance to being picked on.

Kirino is a hardworking and dedicated individual. Once he finds something to channel his effort into, he puts in his all, no matter what it is. He's quite reliable and responsible. When he sets his priorities, he sticks to them. When he makes commitments and promises, he follows through without fail (or at least he tries his hardest to). All in all, Kirino comes off as that perfect best friend.

There's a problem with that, though. He's not. He's far from it.

He's prone to jealousy, especially of others' skills, abilities, and every now and then, status. Not even his best friend is safe from this jealousy. His hard work and dedication can prove to be a double-edged sword. His efforts to be reliable can sometimes backfire, especially when paired with the former. He'll spread himself too thin amongst several projects and tasks. Combine that with his tendency to not put in anything less than one hundred percent and it'll lead to him burning himself out with a startling frequency. His multiple double-edged traits aside, Kirino is also rather indecisive. He has an incredibly difficult time making any sort of major decision without having to be pushed into it. If allowed, he'd spend ages weighing the pros and cons and trying to see the situation from multiple standpoints. Needless to say, this can get annoying to everyone around him. Not to mention, he's a hypocrite. He advises Shindou to not take too much responsibility onto himself… except that's exactly what Kirino himself does. However, as bad as all these may seem, he has one major, defining negative trait: he has the nastiest tendency to hide things.

He won't tell anyone if he's upset for any reason himself. He'll just smile and dismiss it. Of course he's not feeling bad. If something someone else is doing annoys him, unless their name is "Kariya Masaki", they won't be asked to stop. Burnt out from trying to do too much at once? That's no problem, he'll just get some caffeine in his system, put a smile on his face, and keep trucking. And if he's jealous of another member of the team? Haha, forget it. Like he's going to let anyone else know that. Especially not if it's going to upset them somehow. He shows no emotional distress (aside from the occasional aggravation) of any sort. It's unbecoming. Kirino has mastered the art of the convincing fake smile. He has convincing others that nothing is wrong down to a science. He's still working on getting the convincing himself part to work.

Kirino is a wonderful friend, he truly is. He just has a bit of a lying problem when it comes to his other problems.
POWERS/ABILITIES: Kirino has two main powers!
The first is mist generation. In short, he is basically a living fog machine. He can secrete mist from his body, usually at will. This power is the one that manifested first, therefore, Kirino has had more practice in controlling it. Not only does the mist generate at will for him, but it will also manifest when he experiences fear, nervousness, or stress. Kirino can stop this mist from escaping for a certain amount of time, however if he holds it in too long, he will fall ill due to his body rejecting the mist. Cases of this are rare as Kirino usually will "let off steam" in the early mornings as part of his usual routine. The mist itself does nothing more than simply obscure vision, though, as Kirino gains even more experience with this power, he will be able to generate an acidic mist that can corrode organic matter.

Kirino's second, less used power is invisibility. This power is a more recent discovery, thus it hasn't been used as much and Kirino's control over the power is poor. It only works for thirty seconds; activating and maintaining this power takes his complete concentration in order to be able to use it properly. If he's even the slightest bit distracted it either won't work completely or Kirino will blink in and out of view when the power is active. As Kirino practices and gains more experience with this power, he'll be able to use it longer and he won't need to concentrate quite as hard to keep the invisibility going.

AU HISTORY: (Note: All the important details on Fifth Sector is found in Erry's app for Shindou, which is here.)
While the small household that just consisted of Kirino and his mother was very open-minded and accepting, the Japanese town that Kirino and his mother lived in was not. One of the measures included to ensure that her son grew up in an accepting environment (whether or not he was a mutant anyway), was Mrs. Kirino leaving her strongly anti-mutant husband. To this day, she has to work several jobs to support herself and her son, but she believes that in the end, every last bit of what she's done has been worth it.

It was surprise to everyone, especially the then five-year-old Kirino, when his powers first manifested. It started off as simple playground fun. It quickly became less and less fun when the other children discovered that their pink-haired playmate gave off short, heavy bursts of mist every time he was scared or startled. Simple, playful teasing turned into outright bullying and Kirino's mother, at her son's request, pulled him out of school to home-school him for a couple years. During these couple years, Kirino secluded himself, only stepping outdoors when he had to, and most importantly, practicing keeping his powers in check. As expected, he got better with time and hoped for some sense of normalcy, but deep down, some part of him realized he was never going to actually live a normal life.

It was after these two years that Kirino met one of the people who, to this day, has the greatest influence over him—his best friend, Shindou Takuto. While Kirino quickly learned that Shindou was a fellow mutant, Kirino never revealed that he had his own mutant powers. It wasn't out of malice or spite; Kirino just felt that he needed to be cautious and to keep his own powers quiet. Most people would dismiss this as being paranoid, but as Kirino found out a few years later, his suspicions weren't unfounded. In the meantime, however, he served as Shindou's confidant, his best friend, and a willing partner for the other boy to practice with his own powers. Kirino practiced with his own powers on his own time. Six years passed this way, rather uneventfully.

The seventh year was when confirmations of Kirino's uncertainties reared their ugly heads in the form of Fifth Sector and its SEEDs. Kirino's skill at hiding his powers came in very, very handy during this time, as he managed to stay under the local SEED's (and thus the rest of Fifth Sector's) radar the entire time. Initially, Kirino was very unsure about the idea of protesting against Fifth Sector and resisting them, but thanks to Shindou, he was eventually swayed. He took a background role in assisting the others, giving input and advice, but never really placing himself in the main line of action. Thanks to the efforts of Raimon's soccer team, along with the assistance of several other schools, Fifth Sector was eventually shut down—massive relief for Kirino. Unfortunately, just soon afterwards, Kirino had discovered that Shindou had been pulled out of Raimon with no warning whatsoever and Kirino had no idea where the boy had gone.

Kirino mentioned this to his mother—who had noticed that the boy had been rather listless since the apparent disappearance of his best friend—and suggested that it was possible that Shindou had left Japan entirely for the Xavier Institute. She offered to attempt to get into contact with the staff at Xavier so that Kirino could transfer in. Kirino ultimately accepted the offer, but told his mother that he had a few things to attend to first. The very first order of business was approaching one Tsurugi Kyousuke, the team's resident ex-SEED, and persuading him to come along. It took a while, but the first-year was eventually convinced. Kirino settled some other things around school and made other preparations to eventually leave. Once everything was out of the way, Kirino and Tsurugi finally made their way overseas and recently begun their time at the Xavier Institute as transfer students.
